A painting made with the encaustic wax method. Opacity. Surface. Sense of object. A thing built rather than painted. No ‘Zorro’ swishes possible here.
Those old German houses seem so sinister, uncanny, unheimlich, un-homely. I made this over a long period but really made my mind up what it was after a recent trip to south Germany. I got to thinking of the repression in those houses, the silences, and bitternesses in the walls. Things unsaid. The silent screams of generations, oppressed by religion and custom. “Why are you so silent?” Ingmar Bergman films always seem to have someone shouting this at the sky.
