Artist Katie Paterson will be in conversation the evening before she brings her artwork First There is a Mountain to Portobello Beach.

Paterson is widely regarded as one of the leading artists of her generation. Collaborating with scientists and researchers across the world, Paterson’s projects consider our place on Earth in the context of geological time and change. Her artworks make use of sophisticated technologies and specialist expertise to stage intimate, poetic and philosophical engagements between people and their natural environment.

For First There is a Mountain Paterson has created a set of buckets in the form of world mountains, which we will use to build sand mountain ranges across Portobello Beach. The work will play out the world’s natural geography and geology against the sea’s tidal times, as each mountain is formed and eroded within the cycle of a day. Each pail is a scale model of one of five mountains: Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa), Mount Shasta (N. America), Mount Fuji (Asia), Stromboli (Europe), and Uluru (Oceania), nested together in a set.

Choreographed over the period of daylight saving time during British Summer Time, from 31 Mar–27 Oct 2019, the artwork will tour to twenty-five high profile coastal art organisations around the UK. First There is a Mountain connects world mountains to the smallest grains of sand. The artwork invites people to slow down and consider the interconnectedness of the world, from shifting coastlines across millennia, to our own eroding coastline.
