The blue of the cover was such an appealing blue that I didn’t want to do too much. It put me into the night. No real intentions but something nocturnal.; it could go this way or that. I take lines for a walk and end up in Hyde Park, a drunk naked swim in the Serpentine with Sean, being chased out the water by a swan, and then just as we were dressed chased by a shouty park ranger guy. He must’ve thought we were a gay couple. We were just pals (and still are).
This brought me to Stuart Morgan and the stories he used to tell me of his nights spent at Hampstead Heath lido. Huge orgies. I suppose he was telling me to shock me, and he did a good job, but he told it in the most casual matter of fact way. I listened aghast and fascinated and was all the time wondering “why’s he telling me all this?”
This was in London at college in the mid-90s in the bar after a day’s painting.
