"This 19th Century sculpture was an idealised image of a young person at a moment of awakening and emotional transcendence.
By re-carving a section of the figure into moveable links I’ve made it less stable, partially collapsing it into a new pose. The figure is still intact but the heavy marble head has shifted, sunk forward and come to rest on the open book she was reading; a new posture that could suggest exhaustion or sorrow."
