Billboard for Edinburgh: Ruth Ewan

2 February 2012 - 30 April 2012

London-based artist Ruth Ewan is the 15th artist to contribute to Ingleby Gallery’s public art and print publishing project. The inspiration for Ewan’s 10 x 13.5ft billboard has developed from Ewan’s recent research into the Socialist Sunday School movement.

The Socialist Sunday School movement emerged in Britain at the end of the 19th Century and flourished in the early part of the 20th century. Labelled as ‘hotbeds of sedition and blasphemy’ by some critics, they faced strong opposition because their political, secular doctrines.

The 10 rules on Ewan’s billboard come from a declaration card that was given to all pupils at the schools.

As part of the project, Ruth Ewan has realised the piece as a limited edition letterpress print. For full details click here.
