Charles Avery - Edinburgh Art Festival Commission

As part of Edinburgh Art Festival's commissions programme The Improbable City, Charles Avery has been invited to create a new public artwork for Waverley Station which will be on display until 30 August.

Charles Avery’s The Islanders is an evolving lifelong project, dedicated to describing the inhabitants, flora and fauna of a fictional island. In a constantly growing body of work (drawing, sculpture and film), Avery explores and records in precise detail the customs, myths, religions and rituals of the islanders. At the heart of the island is Onomatopoeia, once a stepping off point for pioneers and travellers, then a bustling boomtown, then a slum in a state of extended decline, and now in the fictional present, it is reborn as a regenerated city of culture and a tourist destination. Onomatopoeia’s municipal park is called the Jadindagadendar, and is filled, not with living botanical specimens, but with artificial trees, flowers and shrubs, an expression of the islanders’ refutation of nature.

Avery's installation, Tree No.5 (from the Jadindagadendar), was unveiled at the end of July and stands over five metres tall. An exotic specimen brought back from a fictional land - part plant, part sculpture, part temple - Avery’s tree sits within our world and outside it, offering a meeting point, or a place for momentary escape and contemplation.

Commissioned by Edinburgh Art Festival and Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art with additional support from Baillie Gifford Investment Managers and Edinburgh World Heritage.
