Rachel Whiteread’s print continues a series of works in which the artist uses dollhouses or doll’s house furniture to explore space and the domestic environment. Whiteread’s image has developed from a photograph of her sculptural installation, ‘Place’, which featured in the exhibition ‘Psycho Buildings’ at the Hayward Gallery, London in Summer 2008. The original photograph has been subtly manipulated by blacking out the upper background of the image to remove the traces of the building interior. At first glance the image appears to be a townscape however, on closer inspection, the wooden floors of the gallery become apparent and the complexity of the image is slowly revealed.
The dollhouses that feature in this work are from the artist’s own collection, amassed over the past 22 years.
