Floating Dolmen

Published in 2009 as part of the Billboard for Edinburgh print series.

At the centre of Tacita Dean’s image is a large cap-stone from a megalithic tomb or dolmen. The image comes from a series of works in which the artist photographs ancient burial sites and manipulates the image painting over the printed photograph. The act of isolating the background gives the stone a strange and imposing sculptural quality and removes it from its historical context.

Here Dean semi-conceals areas of the image using numerous layers white printing ink.
