Peter Doig

Peter Doig was born in Edinburgh in 1959. Doig spent most his childhood in Trinidad and Canada and moved to London in 1979 to study at art school. Since 2002, Doig has lived and worked in Trinidad.

Doig’s work is an intriguing mix of figurative and abstract elements frequently disorientating the viewer by combining recognisable scenes with dream-like figures and acid colours.

Doig sometimes appropriates images from films or photographs and works them into his paintings. His subject matter varies but his paintings often focus on man’s relation to his environment.

In 2008, Doig had a major retrospective at Tate Britain which subsequently toured to Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt. He has also enjoyed solo exhibitions at Dallas Museum of Art, Pinakothek Der Moderne, Munich, Bonnenfanten Museum, Maastricht and Whitechapel Art Gallery, London. The National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, also launched a major exhibition of his work as part of the 2013 Edinburgh Art Festival.
