Craig Coulthard is an Edinburgh-based artist. His most ambitious project to date, Forest Pitch, was created as a part of the Cultural Olympiad. On 25 August 2012, two amateur football matches were played by recent British citizens in the middle of a Scottish forest near Selkirk, bringing together art and sport. The Spruce trees that were felled to create the pitch were used to build the goal posts and the changing rooms for the teams. After match day, the lines of the football pitch were planted with native trees to create a living, evolving sculpture. The project invites us to consider various ideas including landscape, memory, community and what it means to be British.
Coulthard’s wider practice incorporates an array of different media including painting, textiles, video, ceramics and printed matter. His work manipulates existing recognisable formats including religious and political banners, fanzines, cross-stitch embroidery to explore social and cultural phenomena as well as real and imagined history.
