A dog in a garden. Paving stones. Pinky Greys, browns, ochres. A dog a bit like Rosie but more lab. Like Nell’s dog, Tessa or Goldie on the telly. Goldie was one of the Blue Peter dogs. She (he?) always seemed a bit dull after the previous dog, the slightly crazy Shep.
Artists always get asked what a work is about. What does it mean? Explain yourself. But you might just as well ask what an artist was doing at the time of an artwork’s conception and execution. What music was being listened to, what food was eaten, TV watched, what sights were seen on the way to and from the studio, and what conversations were had. It’s an image to hang a feeling on. It must be something about our time, of lockdown and isolation. A walled garden. “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall” Robert Frost wrote. Don’t agree. Painters love walls. A painter I know Stonehaven took me on a detour to show me his favourite wall in the town. It was a nice one and very tall.
