24 January – 3 March 2018 (outside opening hours)
David Batchelor’s Sixty Minute Spectrum (2017) is a new commission that transforms the newly restored Hayward Gallery roof into a chromatic clock.
Flooded with dramatic colour, the gallery’s unique pyramidal roof lights shift gradually through the entire visible chromatic spectrum over the course of 60 minutes. Starting and ending the hour as a vivid red, they appear at different points throughout their cycle in orange, yellow, green, blue, purple or pink, and all the colours in between.
Sixty Minute Spectrum is part of Batchelor’s ongoing exploration of the intense, synthetic colour that characterises modern cities, and the ways in which we respond to colour in our advanced technological age.
Celebrating and illuminating the iconic architecture of Hayward Gallery, this ambitious commission also provides a countdown to the reopening of the building in January 2018.
