Ian Hamilton Finlay: Postcard-Prints & Folding Cards

Ian Hamilton Finlay founded the Wild Hawthorn Press in 1961 and in the four decades that followed he made something like 700 post card-prints. These cards and folding cards, usually published in editions of 250 copies, were the medium in which many of Finlay’s ideas were first expressed and by which his thoughts were communicated in their most direct and simple manner.

The poet Thomas Clark has written:

“The postcard has the wonderful advantage that it is a medium before it is a form. It addresses the one it is addressed to. You think nothing of it, so it can slip into your world, and into your affections almost unnoticed. Not having the glamour of a painting or sculpture, it can deal with ideas directly, without having to travel through the detour of art. Its proper place is on the mantlepiece rather than the plinth.”

On display here is a very small selection of Finlay’s postcard works. Please return to the main Books & Editions section to view a selection of Finlay’s prints, artist books and other works.
