Winston Roeth
New York State based artist Winston Roeth's exquisite tempera panel paintings are deceptively simple when taken in at a swift glance: flat planes of colour which only reveal their secrets through intense looking. Beautifully painted with layers of velvety pigment, Roeth's works play optical tricks, drawing the viewer into dense voids, or bouncing the gaze back with vibrant colour. Roeth will often overlay these intensely matt expanses of colour with grids or frames of shimmering paint in perfectly balanced compositions of light, depth and colour. In a world so accustomed to instant gratification they require and reward enquiring contemplation.
