Tommy Grace
Tommy Grace's work is a play of opposites, balancing extraordinary draftsmanship with messy gesture. His paintings of imagined ruins are meticulously drawn from Classical architecture but swim beneath the random stains of Rorschach inkblots. In other works on paper, exquisite geometric patterns are skillfully corralled from a testing combination of red wine and blotting paper. Grace's interest in unorthodox materials - red wine, fizzy drinks, E numbers and such – also marks a point of intersection between his individual practice, and the collaborative works he makes with partner Kate Owens. Taking the disposable detritus of our everyday, consumer-driven lives and playfully combining it with historical reference they both explore the legacy and lifespan of things, considering current visual culture through that of the past.
Grace was born in Edinburgh in 1979 and graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2002. He currently lives and works in London. Owens & Grace were co-founders and curators of influential artist run gallery The Embassy in Edinburgh from 2003-2006. Grace has already exhibited widely, both individually and collaboratively, including: The Rose Tattoo, Collective Gallery, Edinburgh (2004); Thunder in Paradise, Glasgow Project Rooms (2004); The Garden, Castlefield Gallery, Manchester (2005); Young Athenians at Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh (2006); Destroy Athens 1st Athens Biennale (2007); I can’t live without… The Showroom, London (2007), and A Colour Box, Arcade, London (2008).
Tommy Grace will held his first solo exhibition at Ingleby Gallery from 4 April - 13 June, 2009, and Owens & Grace held a one day exhibition on 4 May, 2009 from 12 - 8pm as part of the Punctuation Programme at Limoncello gallery, London.
